Using a play on the word date, the Shields Date Garden lures tourists on Highway 111 in Indio into their parking lot. When you enter the store, you do see a theater in the back, which runs the movie that gives information about the date in the Coachella Valley. The movie points out that in order to bear dates, the male date tree’s pollen must get to the female’s flowers. The wind usually does this; however, on date farms, the farmers do it, hence the human-assisted sex life of a date. Only the female trees produce the fruit.
